Fitness Friday: Relationship Fitness & Healthy Dependence

Welcome back to our Fitness Friday series! This week, we’re shifting our focus from physical fitness to an equally important aspect—Relationship Fitness. In our journey through life, understanding and nurturing the dynamics of our relationships is crucial. Today, we discuss a fundamental component of any relationship: dependence.

Understanding Dependence

Dependence is often seen in a negative light, but it’s a basic fact of human interaction. We all depend on others in various ways, whether for emotional support, physical needs, or companionship. The key is recognizing when this dependence is healthy and when it is not.

Healthy dependence is empowering. It makes you stronger, wiser, and more resilient. It supports your growth and is usually a temporary phase as you move through challenges or transitions. Conversely, unhealthy dependence can weaken your spirit and limit your potential, often becoming a long-standing hurdle that’s hard to overcome.

Navigating Dependence in Relationships

When you notice patterns of unhealthy dependence emerging in your relationship, it’s essential to address them. This should be done gently and with understanding. Supporting your partner through these times means encouraging them to take steps on their own, but doing so lovingly—without ego or pride influencing your actions.

Reflective Questions

  1. Self-Assessment of Dependence: Are you and your partner creating a balance of healthy dependence? Or are there areas where unhealthy dependencies are beginning to take root?
  2. Support vs. Challenge: Do you find it more difficult to support your partner lovingly, or to challenge them when needed?

Stages of Dependence in Relationships

  • Romance Stage: This initial phase is full of love, attention, and support but is often the most immature form of love.
  • Power Struggle Stage: Here, individuals work towards independence but must remain flexible in their dependence. This stage is akin to adolescence in personal development, and many couples find themselves stuck here for years.
  • Mature Love Stage: Achieving a balance of independence and dependence marks this stage. Couples see themselves as partners on the same team, aiming for common goals without the desire to change the other.

Moving Towards Interdependence

The ultimate goal in relationship fitness is interdependence, where both partners are strong on their own yet even stronger together. This doesn’t mean the journey is easy. True love requires effort and understanding, and sometimes, external support is needed.

Myth vs. Reality:

  • Myth: True love should be easy and effortless.
  • Reality: Real love involves continuous effort and dedication.
