There’s a simple but profound truth in the phrase, “Living things grow; growing things change.” It’s a reminder that life, by its very nature, is dynamic. Growth isn’t stagnant, and change isn’t optional—it’s the natural companion of any living thing that’s evolving.
Yet, this time of year, many people find themselves in a slump. The sparkle of the holidays fades, the days are short and dark, and motivation often runs low. Feelings of sadness or even depression can creep in. Some say depression is “anger turned inward,” and while that may not be the full picture, it does highlight something important: emotional stagnation often stems from internal tension that needs release and redirection.
So what’s the first step out of that emotional cavern?
Movement.
Get outside. Move your body. Connect with nature. Even a short walk in fresh air can begin to shift your state of mind. From there, you can begin to engage with deeper mindset work.
One of the biggest mindset shifts we help clients make at Discovery Coaching Group is moving away from expectation and into acceptance. Too often, we suffer not because of our circumstances, but because of the unrealistic expectations we place on them. We believe life should always feel good, and when it doesn’t, we judge it—and ourselves—harshly.
But what if we expected change instead of fearing it? What if we welcomed growth instead of resisting it?
Growth means transformation. Change means movement. And yes, sometimes that movement is messy or painful—but it’s also necessary and good. When we let go of what isn’t and choose to be grateful for what is, we unlock the door to authentic transformation.
In our coaching programs, we teach clients how to identify where they’re stuck, shift their inner narrative, and take action rooted in awareness and gratitude. This isn’t about sugarcoating life—it’s about meeting it with open eyes and an open heart.
So if you find yourself in a season of emotional winter, take comfort in this truth:
“Living things grow; growing things change.”
You are growing.
You are changing.
And that’s exactly what living is all about.
